The island of Haiti has a long and dramatic history. European found this island in 1500's by Columbus.After the arrival of Europeans the Native Americans faced lots of problems. They were facing harsh working condition, living condition as well as health problems. The native population in Haiti nearly extinct. In 1660 French started to rule after the agreement with Spain. They named the island Saint-Domingue. Louis XIV of French convinced people to develop agriculture in Saint-Domingue. Hence settlers started to plant tabacco, cotton and cocoa in Saint- Domingue. However, the plantation owners faced a difficult problem, since most of the native population die they were lacing labors. Therefore. They started to import slaves from Africa. These slaves contributed to the rapid economic growth of the island. By 1780, Saint-Domingue produced 40% of the sugar and 60% of the coffee in Europe.
